FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Why should I ask Robin Coss Aviation to build my RV?

Robin Coss Aviation is the only approved professional build facility for RVs in South Africa, both with SACAA and with Van’s Aircraft. We have over 40 aircraft completed and aircraft being used in Flight Schools. All of this equates to a superior product based on accumulative years of experience; not only with the completion of aeroplanes but the staff members experience in the field. Management are involved with each and every build and setting the standards by example and are on hand all the time. Together, Robin and Damon have forty years of experience in the field.

  • Are others that advertise building RVs approved?

No. In order to be approved by the SACAA it is a long and costly process and none of the other builders have gone through this process and we doubt they ever will.

  • What type of colour schemes do you offer, and type of finishes?

Our standard aircraft are offered with a two-colour stripe scheme, but most clients opt for specific colour schemes. We work with the clients on a one-to-one basis. The finishes are of the best quality and we use top spec paint from reputable suppliers.

  • I see you use Dynon. Why them? Do you fit anything else?

A couple of years ago we chose to fit Dynon to our aircraft as we feel that they are the most experienced of the non-certified EFIS manufacturers. We have had exceptional service with this company in regards to supply, service, backup, etc. They are also extremely reliable and do not freeze in flight. They have a professional finish and installation system. We also offer Garmin products now that we are a Garmin dealer. Garmin is well-known for the high quality of their products which come from a certified base. We are happy to fit their products as well. Both of the above mentioned suppliers can offer a good warranty and reliable product. It is RCA’s philosophy to advise clients of which products to use in the aircraft for long-term reliability and trouble free operation from service-to-service.

  • How do I pay for the aircraft?

There is a Rand and a Dollar exposure portion to the purchase. We work with each client on a one-to-one basis. It is recommended to pay as much as the Dollar portion up front as possible, but we often work with each person’s specific needs in regards to cash flow. The Rand portion that is made up of labour, consumables, upholstery, local fees, etc, are divided into monthly progress payments with the remainder on completion. We have also finance options available through ABSA Bank on the aircraft. These are dealt with on a one-to-one basis with the bank.

  • What is included when buying an aircraft from RCA?

Due to the fact that RCA is an authorized manufacturer, we do all the ordering of components, parts, etc, for traceability purposes. We handle all the banking transactions, customs clearances, building of aircraft inclusive of wiring, painting etc. We also carry out all the necessary SACAA paperwork on behalf of the client including registration, authority to fly, etc. Test flights necessary to test the aircraft is included as well as the fuel for the test flights. More importantly, you are receiving backup of your product from a reputable company that has many years in the industry.

  • What are the benefits of having the aircraft built with a manufacturing organization?

As per SACAA regulations, the aircraft can only be built for recreational and educational purposes by an individual for his own benefit. Otherwise it has to be built by a manufacturing organization. Part of these rulings are to set a standard which the SACAA can audit and to protect the general public. All parts during the build have a traceable source and build procedures are to a set standard. These standards, as pertaining to RCA, are exceptionally higher than an amateur built aircraft.

  • How do I convert onto my new aircraft?

Conversions on the aeroplane are handled by Cape Town Flying Club. They are the operators of our two RV-7As, and therefore have instructors available to convert onto the RV-7, RV-8, RV-9 and RV-10 range.
